The project aims to address a wide range of environmental, social, and public health issues resulting from the discharge of untreated wastewater. It will also halt annual financial losses estimated at approximately 80 million ILS incurred under the pretext of treating transboundary wastewater. In addition, the project will provide a non-conventional water source for agricultural use, estimated at around 22,500 m³ per day.
One of the project’s key impacts is the protection of groundwater layers, thereby safeguarding water supplies from the Eastern groundwater Basin in Hebron and Bethlehem governorates. The total cost of the project, including all components of Phase 1—capacity building, operation, and maintenance—amounts to $62 million. The project also includes cleaning the Wadi al-Simman stream from wastewater and rehabilitating it to restore a healthy water source that serves the local communities.
